The design for this card was inspired by a card from Pinterest by Tui Nathan. You can see the original card here. I really liked the silhouette image stamped on a newsprint style patterned paper, and then inset into a frame.
I’m not sure my version turned out as nicely, but I do like how it turned out, and I learned a few things along the way that I can apply next time I make a card like this.
To begin, I had to figure out how large a circle to cut in my top layer paper for the window. So I stamped my silhouettes on a scratch piece of paper and used my Creative Memories circle cutter templates to figure out my base size. If you’ve never used the Creative Memories cutting system, it’s really quite unique. You use their circle template and one of three blades – red, green or blue. Each blade is slightly farther away from the edge of the template, so you can easily cut out shapes and then mattes that are slightly larger or smaller to inset on top of one another.
So, I cut out my top window and then chose the next blade down to cut another window from my black cardstock. This allowed me to create an inset black border in my window and a black matte for the outer edge at the same time.
Once I had the top layer complete, I lightly traced the window on my bottom layer, book page print patterned paper. I used that to position my stamps and then inked and stamped them with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Then I mounted the top window layers on foam tape and adhered them to the bottom layer and all that was left was embellishments.
I cut a label from another patterned paper in the same paper collection and stamped a sentiment from the stamp set on it. I popped that label up on the front of the card, but I needed something just a little bit more. I looked through my stash but pearls weren’t right and gems weren’t right, and that’s when I remembered a technique I had seen before. So I took some of my adhesive backed pearls and coloured them black using my Spectrum Noir alcohol markers. I added them to the card front, and that’s exactly what I needed.
