There is so much glitter on this card it makes me smile every time I look at it. I had just finished making this card when a friend called. She asked what I was doing, and I answered honestly with “I’m making cards and I’m covered in glitter, my floor is covered in glitter, my dog is covered in glitter!”
I have to give credit where credit is due – the design for this card came from Jennifer McGuire and her video on Multicolor Stencil Techniques. Now I didn’t have the stencil she used, or the supplies she used, so I had to figure out how to emulate this card using the supplies I did have.
Here were the steps I followed:
- I started with a piece of black cardstock, cut to 3 3/4″ by 5″.
- I measured up 1/2 inch from the bottom right corner, and the same 1/2 inch along the bottom.
- I joined the two points with a diagonal line, then took 1/4 inch Sookwang tape and followed the bottom edge along the diagonal line I had drawn.
- Using a see-through ruler to line up the top edge of my tape, I measured up 1/4″, repeating this the whole way across the panel, leaving one 3/4″ gap after the second row to stamp my sentiment.
- Once I had all the tape on, without removing the backing paper, I stamped my sentiment and embossed it in white embossing powder.
Now here’s where the fun started. I wanted to mirror Jennifer’s rainbow colour palette, so I figured out which stripe would be my purple row and removed the backing paper from the Sookwang double-sided tape. I generously applied my Martha Stewart fine glitter in purple and burnished it into the tape. I tapped off the excess and used a dry brush to really make sure all the loose glitter was gone. Then I moved out from there, peeling the backing paper away from the rows on both sides of the purple and applying my blue glitter. I followed this process all the way through the rainbow, carefully removing all the loose glitter and putting the remainder in the jar after I was done with each colour to avoid contaminating one colour with another.
I framed the finished panel with a piece of white cardstock, and then mounted both on a black card base. This card sparkles so much, it’s hard to capture in a photograph but it really does shine. I can definitely see me doing this technique again in all kinds of different variations and colours!
