Metallic Forest

Okay, who needs a break from florals? While making two dozen cards from the same paper pack was fun, and I still have more to share, it was getting a bit monotonous in here. So, I decided to shake things up a bit, channel some Tim Holtz vibes, and try something new.

This card was inspired by the work of a few people actually. Designer Tim Holtz obviously, his products lend themselves so well to the grunge style and I used a few on here, but also Tamera at Plays Well with Paper and Melissa Kerman who has done some amazing projects with foil but whose blog seems to be gone!

I started with a piece of Tim Holtz Ideology Metallic silver cardstock. This stuff is amazing, and I only have one pad, so I’ve been hording it like a dragon hordes treasure. I embossed it using the Stampin’ Up Pinewood Planks embossing folder. I tried it both embossed and de-bossed and I actually liked how the de-bossed version turned out better. Then I borrowed Tamera’s technique of using Distress Crayons in black and brown to burnish into the design. For best results use your fingers, but be prepared to get messy.

Once I got the look I wanted, adding colour, removing colour, moving it around, I then took a rough sponge and dabbed some versamark embossing ink in various places all over the design. I sprinkled on some copper embossing powder, used a dry brush to remove any in areas that looked to uniform or had too much, and heat set that. I repeated the process, dabbing in some of the empty areas, this time applying gold embossing powder.

Then I die cut a few leaf shapes from black cardstock. I pressed my versamark ink pad into the die cut, again used a dry brush to remove some to give it a more rustic, rough edged look, and then sprinkled these with gold embossing powder. I heat set the embossing powder until it was smooth and melted.

I used the Simon Says Stamp Thinking of You die and cut it three times out of black cardstock, which I then glued and stacked one on top of the other to make a nice thick die cut. This die is pretty large, so it pretty much covered the full width of my standard A2 card front, so I adhered it to the very bottom of the panel. I added my embossed leaves using a little foam tape, and then just a touch of colour with some red bakers twine.

I then mounted the whole panel on a black card base. It’s a bit dark, a bit grungy, but I absolutely love it!
